    Default oil change interval

    hello,

have a 2010 I4 Venza. Took it in for 5K mile service which includes oil change, but dealership won't change it until 10K because the engine has synthetic oil. However, the manual says 5K. The deader ship says the manual will be updated, and a new copy will be mail to me - only god knows when.

What is the true oil change interval on this car? Please help!

I think both V6 and I4 comes with factory synthetic.

The 4 comes with synthetic, the 6 does not. The interval is 10,000 miles for the 4 and 5,000 for the 6, if you continue using a nonsynthetic oil. With a synthetic oil you can extend the milage between changes, but in that case you ought to switch to a high premium filter (e.g., WIX, NAPA Gold, or AMSOIL).

Personally I would not wait until 10K even if that is what the factory says. If you are leasing the car okay, however if you plan to keep it 10 years I would do it at 5K. Just my two cents.

There is much misunderstanding about syn vs. dino oil. I have used syn (mobil 1) in my '06 Tacoma for years. At first, I still changed it at 5000 mile intervals, but now I do 7500 mile intervals. I am an exploration geologist and use the Tacoma for my off road work in the mountains. Synthetic oil is perhaps more expensive, but the extented oil change interval as well as its performance in an engine make it the cheapest and best alternative.

For my new Venza, I have the 25000 mile Toyota service (oil changes etc.) coupons that I will use to break in the engine. I will have them change the oil (dino is what they use) every 5k miles. After that, I will change to synthetic for the remainder of car life. Synthetic oil will ultimately make dino oil obsolete.

You are correct about the syn. oil. I too, have used it for years and always employed a 7500 mile interval. With my new Venza, I have switched to the best syn. oil available: AMSOIL. It is superior to all the other big oil company brands. For the comparison data go to their web site. With this oil and using a WIX filter (the latter changed every 5,000 miles) I will change the oil once a year. The prescribed change interval is 25,000 miles or once a year. Because I don't drive that much, it will be yearly for me.

Holy oil change, Batman!! 25,000 miles on an oil change?? Wow! I will check out Amsoil. I have heard of it many times, but for my Venza, I want the best quality oil for the engine. But first, I will use the dealership oil up to 25000 miles as per the service agreement (not bad agreement).

    Cool

Well I am confused. My Ottawa Toyota dealership who just sold me a Venza 3 months ago says to show up every 8K km for an oil change under their first 5 free maintenance oil changes.
So Is it suppose to be 5k or 8 K km per oil change for the V6 or is it subjective depending on the dealership ?

I was told every 5k miles, which is about 8k km. So your dealership in Ottawa is correct. I tried to find reference in the owners manual, but could find nothing about oil change interval. But it is up to you. For the first oil change on a new vehicle, some folks like to get the oil changed out sooner due to the bits of milling metal in the oil of a new engine. But I believe with modern dyno oil, it is every 5k miles for modern engines. I know, back in the 70s and earlier, oil and engines were different, and oil changes were no more than 3k miles. But things have changed for the better.

The bottom line is this... It is your vehicle. Check your oil and see if it is darker, still light (which it should be) and make your own decision. Personally, I will be changing at 5k miles until I go to the synthetic oils, then I will change at 7.5k or 10k miles. Depending on the condition of the oil upon inspection.
